Ruhr University in Germany may have answered a question – why are we either left or right handed?

Have you ever wondered why someone is either left or right handed? No? Neither have I. Thankfully some people at Ruhr University in BOCHUM, Germany, wonder such things.
Research in the past floated a theory that your left or right hand preference may have come from the brain. The BOCHUM study thinks that it may come from the spinal cord in utero instead.
Per the UPI: The hand preference develops in utero at about eight weeks gestation and is visible in the fetus on ultrasound at around the 13th week of pregnancy. Arm and hand movements come from the motor cortex in the brain, which sends a corresponding signal to the spinal cord translating it into motion. However, the motor cortex is not connected to the spinal cord initially in human development. The connection between motor cortex and the spinal cord comes later, after precursors of handedness are apparent in utero (2017.)
Researchers analyzed gene expression in the spinal cord between eight and 12 weeks of pregnancy and found significant right-left differences in the eighth week in the parts of the spinal cord that control arm and leg movement. Researchers also traced the cause of asymmetric gene activity and found epigenetic factors that lead to enzymes bonding methyl groups to the DNA, which affects or minimizes the reading of genes. Results showed this occurs in a different way in the left and right spinal cord showing a difference in the activity of genes on both sides.
